With its gorgeous story-telling, Making it Home features a plethora of distinctive characters that jump off the page. With the stories spanning several decades, one of my favourite aspects was how they all intertwine in their shared histories. I was hooked from the outset and couldn’t put it down! Emotive and thought-provoking, with a sprinkling of good humour; I am already planning a reread.

‘Making It Home’ by Caroline Greville is a set of ingeniously linked short stories on the theme of belonging, filled with memorable characters, drama and warmth, spanning one hundred years and crossing continents. The opener is a tale of an elderly amnesiac, who gate-crashes a family Christmas in the fictional Welsh Village of Moelbach, bringing with her chaos and a mysterious silver clock. I loved this book. Caroline Greville is a natural story-teller, moving effortlessly between the contemporary setting and the historical tales. The characters – all personalities great and small – are wonderful: determined heroines, good-hearted heroes, conmen, grumpy vicars, and for my money, one of the nastiest, creepiest ‘Victorian’ villains to appear on the pages of a short story. A terrific read all round; five stars for invention and enjoyment.
